In a futuristic world where cities are now built on top of the ocean without interaction with land, scientists are now working on finding ways to create pathways to the fertile earth that has long eluded their current society. Streetwise girl Carmen accidentally stumbles upon one of these projects: a sentient metal winged metamorphic robot designed to resemble a human boy. Carmen develops a fond relationship with the metallic boy who calls himself Alexander, only for the two to learn of the forces determined to use him for malicious intent. Thus begins a desperate escape to the unknown, where the question of whether a robot can develop human emotions and complex behaviors might find itself an answer.
