Barkovich is introduced as obnoxious loud mouth. He's described as being dark-haired and olive skinned. Early in the Walk, he provokes a boy named Rank, which leads to an altercation that results in Rank's death. This makes walkers turn against Barkovich, calling him a killer. McVries is especially hateful towards him. He eventually admits he doesn't know how to be any other way, and confesses he's lonely and wishes he had more friends.
