Notorious killer Hieronimus Smith robbed and shot everyone in a bank. Caleb Hawke has finally found a quiet life with Maggie. His name continue to grow. Stories are told about a trapper who survived, faced and fought everything. Truth is still there. Far from Caleb, Smith is killed by mysterious gunman known as The Preacher, hunting the worst the law can't punish, and before he kills, he always recites a passage from the Bible. Caleb’s quiet life ends when his old friend Cpt. Thomas Rourke arrives with news. Homesteaders are being threatened, driven from their land and disappearing. Rourke asks Caleb to help him find out who do that. Caleb sets out with Maggie, Old Crow and Eli Mercer, a young frontiersman raised on stories of Hawke who came to meet the legend. Trail leads through burned farms, frightened settlements and camps and toward Fred Moorhouse, owner of the Continental Western Railroad. The Preacher is on track too and hunting the men responsible, leaving bodies, and verses. Buck Shaw, chief of the railroad police, is investigating and sees Caleb as an outsider interfering in his case. Railroad foreman Everett Skelton is unaware, concerned only to finish the line until he discovers how the land being cleared for it. Determined to complete his line at any cost, Moorhouse has secretly hired Warren Tallman, a former Confederate cavalry officer, to lead the gunmen forcing settlers from their land. Tallman is an old acquaintance of Rourke and Caleb from the war. Caleb and his companions also meet Reverend Josiah Kane, a kind traveling preacher helping displaced families. As Caleb, Rourke and Shaw close in on Moorhouse and Tallman, their hunt collides with that of The Preacher. Tallman to silence those who can expose him, drawing them toward an unfinished railroad bridge above a vast canyon. The old and new West collide in a battle. Railroad will still come. World will change. But first, Caleb intends to make those responsible answer for their crimes
