Story Plot

Set in a world that seems to have forgotten the values of simplicity, justice and solidarity, "The Last Idealist" narrates the life and legacy of José "Pepe" Mujica, from his days as a guerrilla in the National Liberation Movement-Tupamaros , through his years in prison, to his historic presidency in Uruguay and his subsequent life as a global symbol of humility and resistance. The film explores the contradictions of leading with austerity in a world ruled by consumerism, while delving into personal relationships and the darkest moments of his life.

  • Possible narrative approach: The film is structured as a conversation between an elderly Mujica (played by Grandinetti) and a foreign journalist (Thompson). Through this interview, flashbacks of his youth, his relationship with Lucía, his years in prison and the complexity of his presidency are told. Key moments include: His participation in the Tupamaros. The years in solitary confinement. His decision to live on his modest farm while being president. His speech at the UN on the climate crisis and consumerism.
  • Duration: 2 hours 15 minutes. Possible premiere and reception: Premiere at festivals such as Cannes or Venice, with a limited theatrical release followed by distribution on Amazon Prime Video. It would be acclaimed for its humanistic approach and the emotional depth of the performances, especially by Grandinetti and Morán.
