In 1963, narrator Abileen Clark is an African-American domestic worker ( "maid") in Jackson Mississippi. She was for socialite Elizabeth Leefolt, raising her two-year-old daughter Mae Mobley, when Elizabeth neglects for being chubby. Aibileen's best friend, Minny Jackson, works for Mrs. Walters and her manipulative daughter Hilly Holbrook, who leads the women's socialite group
