chefner Willem Dafoe is usually my favorite choice to play the Joker, but in the DKR, we actually have a way calmer and more controlled version of the character, who is still recovering from a period of isolation and is only beginning to re-engage with the outside world, as fighting against batman was the only thing which gave his life a sense. An other important aspect of his character is that he can escalate and unleash his full psychopathic wrath when he returns to his old habits, especially when he interacts with Batman. While Willem Dafoe is a great pick, has played some similar characters and has certainly the range to portray the darker side of the character, I'll have my doubts he can convicingly convey the transition from calm to chaos that is central to the Joker in this comic. Jack Nicholson's Joker died at the end of the first Batman movie so I don't really see how this movie could have worked as a sequel to the Burtonverse, except if you set it in a different Multiverse.
