Story Plot

2 seconds into the future, 13 girls ages 13-19 are selected for a high-stakes competition called The Choosing, which is a popularity contest with a dark twist. This year, kind and outgoing Maeve is selected, and so starts a downward spiral of violence, sex, and betrayal. Inspired by The Hunger Games, Danganronpa, and Black Swan.

    We open on a government announcement introducing the concept of the Choosing: 13 girls, aged 13-19, all are brought to a remote island and use social media to gather a fanbase. However, they must kill the other girls who could challenge them, and get away with it. If they don’t, they too will be murdered brutally. 18 year old Maeve Austin is chosen, alongside her best friend Hilda. Maeve is secretly jealous of Hilda’s looks, as she believes she is ugly. She has a talk with her boyfriend Oscar, and they agree to find a way to talk to each other over the long range. Maeve and Hilda are shipped off to the island, and meet the other girls; Patty, Lily, Olivia, Afia, Samara, Luisa, Georgia, Sid, Madeline, Irene, and Willa. The first thing they do as a group is Truth or Dare. After Luisa quietly bullies the girls, they all go back to their rooms. There, Maeve sees a woman sitting on the beach who looks like her, but skinnier. At breakfast the next day, she forces herself to throw up in the toilet until she pukes blood. Afia screams, and the body of Olivia is seen, head crushed on the marble floor. After questioning who it could be, they all decide that it is Georgia, and she is thrown from the roof. Hilda makes a pact with Maeve that they won't out each other, no matter what, and Maeve begrudgingly agrees. Then, it’s time for the first official challenge. A song will play, and the girls will have to do the dance that corresponds with it. It ends up being Maeve against Luisa, and Luisa sweeps Maeve’s legs out from under her. She ends up with a concussion, and the challenge is stopped. Maeve masturbates while dreaming of Oscar. Time passes by, and more bodies pile up. Lily murders Patty by dropping a block of marble on her, Sid slits Madeline’s throat, Samara gouges out Afia’s eyes, and soon it’s just Maeve, Hilda, Luisa, Irene and Willow. Oscar sends Maeve a package with a gun in it, “just in case”. She hides it under her pillow. The next challenge is a beauty pageant, and Maeve and Hilda’s idol, Miss Edelin, is judging. Luisa sabotages Maeve’s dress, but Hilda helps her fix herself up, giving her a blowout and fixing her dress. Hilda ends up winning the pageant, Maeve in dead last, and she has a complete breakdown, screaming “Why don’t you love me!?” at the crowd until she is hauled back to her room by security. Hilda comes to her room and comforts her, accidentally letting loose that Oscar cheated with her. They have an argument, before Maeve sends a pole through her eye, killing her instantly. She then goes on a rampage, killing everyone left with the gun. When she gets to Luisa, she has no more bullets, and instead beats her to death. Helicopters filled with reporters descend, and a smiling Maeve smiles up at them, the very first winner of the Choosing.
