When the Red Wedding destroys the Northern cause and reshapes the entire war, Elara's connections to multiple factions — she has cultivated relationships across all five kings' camps through the Tyrell's marriage strategy — make her the series' political engine. Her relationship with Lucas of the Brotherhood Without Banners — a knight who serves no king but refuses to stop being one — is the series' central romance: two people trying to find something worth protecting when kingdoms are falling.
