Story Plot

The Bounty of Ryder is a 2025 American Western action film written and directed by James Mangold. Produced by Legendary Pictures and New Line Cinema and distributed by Lionsgate, it is the first installment in the Chronicles of Charlotte Ryder film series (and the second chronologically). The film features an ensemble cast that includes Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Vincent D'Onofrio, Sean Astin, Elijah Wood, Christopher Judge, and Samuel L. Jackson. Set in 1867, it follows a middle-aged bounty hunter (DiCaprio) who retired and settled down with his wife (Winslet) and daughter (Armstrong) as he is forced by his violent former superior (D'Onofrio) to hunt down their marshall and boss (Judge) after his family is threatened. The Bounty of Ryder was released in theaters on November 29th, 2025; it grossed over $815 million and became a financial success and the tenth-highest-grossing film of 2025. The film received generally positive reviews, with praise for its style and action sequences, as well as DiCaprio, Armstrong, D'Onofrio, Judge, and Jackson's performances, but criticism for its complex portrayal of gangs and the violent content. A prequel entitled The Bounty of Ryder Part II was released the following year, while a proper sequel entitled The Bounty of Ryder Part III: Blood or High Honor was released two years after this film.

    Plot: In 1867, retired bounty hunter Maverick "Mace" Ryder lives in a farm, with his daughter Charlotte "Charley" and his wife Susan "Sue", within the colder climate of Wyoming. Charley displays much anger issues despite having a private need for a companion, and her parents are unaware that she wishes to become a bounty hunter like Mace was. One day while arriving home from work, Mace finds that Charley has been locked in her room and Sue has been kidnapped; after unlocking her room door, Mace tells Charley the truth and asks her to stay home before he equips his old gear and rides away. However, despite not knowing what happened to Sue until Mace arrived, Charley knows that the kidnapper is her father's former superior and retired sheriff Harrison Rake, whose twin brother and deputy Benjamin was killed by marshall Franklin Willis, and is forced to follow him because of this so she can, without him knowing, help him find out why Rake kidnapped Sue.

    Mace speaks with the current sheriff and his friend, Harold McConnell, who has placed a bounty on Rake for several manslaughters; realizing that Rake is Sue's kidnapper, Mace decides to go after Rake under the condition that before he kills him, he asks him what he wants in exchange for his wife's safety. Mace then bestows to McConnell a travelling map and a knife for an unspecified reason, and says "When the time's right."

    Meanwhile, Charley spots Rake and his men, as well as the captive Sue, but wisely decides against going in alone and shooting them. Mace arrives, and Rake reveals that he kidnapped Sue in order to blackmail Mace into becoming a bounty hunter once again. Mace reluctantly agrees to handle tasks for Rake in exchange for Sue and her brother Martin's freedom; he asks him to hunt down every deputy connected to Benjamin's death, and then lastly, Marshall Willis himself. Charley decides to stay and watch Rake and his men in case they alter the deal, while Mace goes on a manhunt for his targets.

    Mace guns down two deputies and later runs into a gang that ambushes him, and he is subsequently captured by them Although tortured and wounded, he manages to kill them all and escape his captivity, before being rescued by McConnell, who happened to be tracking the gang. After recovering from his injuries, Mace is given back his weapons and he thanks McConnell for helping, before he rides away to continue his hunt.

    Charley is later found by Bennett St. John, a deputy on Rake's payroll, who then tries to bring her to Rake, but Charley escapes and is found by an arriving Mace; although Mace scolds Charley for disobeying his instructions to stay home, he later apologizes and allows her to keep watching Rake, having learned from her that Rake does not intend to follow their deal other than letting Sue and Martin go free. Before riding away, Mace gives Charley his rifle for when it is time to fight once he is betrayed. Hunting down two more deputies but unable to find Bennett despite knowing he had found Charley and likely told Rake she was watching him, he confronts his final target, Willis.

    Much to Mace's surprise, Willis, after Benjamin's death, has since retired from his duties as marshall, and McConnell, revealed to actually be the current marshall, visits them both and joins their conversation; it is also revealed that Mace was involved in Benjamin's death, and he adds that the latter had tried to kill Sue and Charley, resulting in Willis shooting him dead and saving their lives after Mace warned him about who Benjamin truly was. Mace spares Willis and leave his house, only to be followed by Rake, who was eavesdropping on the whole conversation, while Willis decides to come out of retirement and help Mace, knowing Rake will betray him.

    Charley watches from a further distance as Mace returns with the intent of killing Rake's men and freeing Sue and Martin. Rake arrives with reinforcements led by Bennett, and a gunfight erupts; while Charley joins the fight and helps Mace get Sue and Martin to safety, Willis and McConnell arrive with the latter's new deputies and snipes several of Rake's men from afar. Aware that defeat is inevitable for him and that he will face certain death, Mace thanks Charley for helping him throughout his mission and encourages her to ride away on his horse with Sue, while he and Martin stay behind to give them time to escape. Martin is fatally shot through his jugular and Mace is stabbed in his left side, while Charley fends off incoming attackers following her and Sue.

    Mace stops his bleeding stab wound long enough to shoot his way through Rake's men so he can confront the latter, only to for himself to be confronted instead by Rake, Bennett, and their second reinforcements; Mace tells Rake his side of the story about his involvement in his brother's death, and points out the latter's attempt to kill his family. Rake believes him, but despite his orders to Bennett and the others to hold their fire, they shoot him down anyway, to Rake's horror. Before Mace dies, Rake comforts him in his final moments after his men leave, and then rides away in regret.
