The Bounty of Ryder Presents — Mace & Sue (or simply The Bounty of Ryder: Mace & Sue) is a 2027 American Western film directed by Colin Trevorrow and written by Taylor Sheridan and James Mangold. Produced by Legendary Pictures and The Stone Quarry and distributed by Lionsgate Films, it is a prequel to main Bounty of Ryder films, the first chronological installment in the Chronicles of Charlotte Ryder film series, and the fourth installment overall. The film stars Freddie Highmore and Florence Pugh as the title characters, alongside Ralph Fiennes, Kelly Reilly, Will Patton, Lili Reinhart, Sterling K. Brown, and Courtney B. Vance. Narrated by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who portrays Charley Ryder in the main films, the film follows the young and reckless newly-minted lawman Maverick "Mace" Ryder as he falls in love with a girl his age, Sue Linson, and faces the corruption spread by a declining, desperate US Marshal Service. Mace & Sue had its world premiere at the 84th Venice International Film Festival on November 5th, 2027, and was released theatrically twenty days later. It received mostly positive reviews from critics and fans, who praised its 1830s setting, action sequences, writing, storyline, origins, the performances of Highmore and Pugh, and emotional depth, but criticized the execution and script. It was also a commercial success, grossing $468 million worldwide, although it is the lowest-grossing film in the series due to a dispute between the director and the studio; Trevorrow successfully opted for a grounded and realistic but loving and genuine relationship between the titular characters, while the studio wanted to lean into romance tropes. A follow-up, intended to conclude Mace and Sue's backstory that led up to the first film, is in development.
