Young Tim Drake was in the audience the night Dick Grayson's parents were murdered. A talented detective, Tim noticed on the news that an acrobatic move performed by the first Robin was used by Dick in the Flying Graysons and correctly deduced that Dick was Robin and Bruce Wayne was Batman. When Batman started darkening in personality (due to Jason Todd's death), Tim convinced him that Robin was needed in Batman's fight against crime and was put in a gruelling training regimen which earned him the mantle of Robin. As with Dick becoming Nightwing however, Tim moved on the become Red Robin after growing into maturity.
