Professor Jonathan Crane taught at a college and was funded by the school to research causes and effects of fear. He had been fascinated by fear his entire life since childhood. When his research was funded he abused his power, conducting inhumane experiments on people who volunteered for his studies, exposing them to their worst fears. When his experiments were discovered he was fired, but everything was kept under wraps. Afterward he became a psychiatrist at Arkham and tortured inmates with fear toxin he created at the college. He was ratted on and arrested for this but then when he was released he took the alias Scarecrow, and terrorized Gotham City
