Years after his parents mysteriously left him with Aunt May and Uncle Ben, Peter Parker has already become Spider-Man, secretly balancing his life as a high-school student with his responsibilities as New York's masked hero. After discovering a hidden briefcase containing clues to his parents' work at Oscorp, Peter agrees to pursue an internship there, where he meets Gwen Stacy and becomes increasingly suspicious of the company's secretive experiments. At Oscorp, Peter encounters Max Dillon, a lonely electrical engineer who idolizes Spider-Man after Peter encourages him to stand up for himself. But when Max is transformed into the superpowered Electro following an accident involving genetically modified electric eels, his admiration for Spider-Man becomes twisted by feelings of betrayal and resentment. Meanwhile, Peter and Gwen grow closer, and Peter eventually reveals his secret identity to her. As Electro's powers grow, he becomes increasingly dangerous, forcing Peter and Gwen to work together to understand what happened to Max and develop an insulated suit capable of protecting Spider-Man from his electrical attacks. After Electro escapes Oscorp and unleashes chaos across New York, Peter pursues him to the company's experimental power plant, where he must convince Max that his abilities can still be used for good. With the help of the plant workers, Spider-Man manages to overload Electro and save the city. Captain Stacy, who once considered Spider-Man a dangerous vigilante, finally recognizes that Peter is a hero. Having embraced his responsibility and found a partner in Gwen, Peter swings into the night as the Amazing Spider-Man—while a post-credits scene suggests that, despite everything, a small part of Max Dillon may still remain.
