Metallo is promptly stopped by Superman in their first battle, and seemingly imprisoned, but unbeknownst to Superman, Metallo’s prison escort is hijacked by Lex Luthor, who brings Metallo to his lab, and has him upgraded further, replacing his heart with Kryptonite, and in his next battle with Superman, he is much stronger, almost overwhelming. In a moment of delirium and rage, Corben turns to hurt Lois, the woman he once loved, to hurt Superman, but Superman takes the blast, injuring himself. The people of Metropolis find courage to stand in Metallo's way as Superman regains his strength. Metallo pushes the civilians aside, but it is too late. Superman defeats Metallo. But only with help.
