Ah, the 70s, the end of the Vietnam War, rise in popularity of martial arts and horror films, introduction of Star Wars, introduction of hip-hop, the Iranian Revolution, etc. Also, introduction of godlike characters (New Gods and Eternals), martial artists (Shang-Chi, Richard Dragon, Iron Fist), horror-themed characters (Ghost Rider and Etrigan the Demon), gunslinging antiheroes (Punisher and Judge Dredd), Wolverine, African-American superheroes (Luke Cage and Black Lightning), and new X-Men. Description of Jefferson Pierce (Black Lightning):

(First appeared in Black Lightning #1 in 1977 and was created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden). Jefferson Pierce grew up in the crime-ridden Suicide Slums of Metropolis. His father was killed at an early age and he was raised by a tailor named Peter Gambi. When, he grew up he became a gold medal-winning Olympic athlete and later the principal of Garfield High School. He had upset a local gang called the 100, who, in retaliation, attacked the school and killed a student named Earl Clifford. Jefferson decided to fight back and don a belt that gave him electric-based powers and become the superhero Black Lightning.
