The Smash fighters have separated. Mario and Sonic are no longer friends, and this time they mean it. Kirby has returned. Samus grieves over the one who confessed his love for her: Captain Falcon. Five years later, each fighter deals with grief in many ways. Most are healthy, like Kirby is now a pastor at a church (finally has a voice) and Sonic and Fox have families of their own. But others are filled with rage, contempt, aggression, and guilt. Suddenly, as Mario apologizes to Sonic for what happened between them, Mario sees his brother Luigi, alive. The same thing happens for Fox when Falco comes out of nowhere and the now lazy Samus with Captain Falcon. But all say that Galeem and Dharkon have taken control of them and that they are returning. The Smash Ball is the only thing to destroy them. As they fade back to their masters, the Smash fighters must reunite to defeat Galeem and Dharkon, and their forces, once and for all. For if they do, they might release their friends and allies from their grasp. They face many challenges and choices, but they eventually obtain the Smash Ball and bring it home to test it. It has proven to be VERY powerful. Looks like they'll have to use it when Galeem and Dharkon attack. Suddenly, backup comes: LITERALLY everyone is here, even their captive friends. This Avengers: Endgame "Portals" moment, which will lead to the epic battle between the Super Smash Bros. (I know there's some females on the team but let's just go with it.)
