Tails is responsible for making the device capable of travelling between each of the Smash Fighters' worlds so Mario and Sonic could visit each other. Now Tails' invention will take the Smash Fighters across different worlds, gathering more fighters, and he gets to come along! Tails is the only one of Sonic's friends to go with them because not only is he the smartest, but Sonic couldn't risk losing Amy or Knuckles, or have Eggman run loose while they're gone.
