Thad Beaumont is an author and recovering alcoholic living in the small town of Ludlow in Maine. Thad's own books - the cerebral fiction literature - are not very successful. However, under the pseudonym George Stark, he writes very successful crime novels, which revolve around a violent murderer named Alexis Machine. When a young man discovers the double literary life of Beaumont and wants to blackmail him, Thad decides himself to publicize the matter and together with his wife Elizabeth they decide to carry out a funeral for George Stark. His epitaph in the local cemetery says it all: "He's not a very nice guy." Stark, however, emerges as a physical entity, and goes on a slaughter, horribly murdering several people.
