Patrick Stewart was considered forthe role of Data, but he insisted on having the lead. The producers thought he would be an odd choice for Picard but eventually let him audition and went with him (even as he at one point tried to do it in a ridiculous hairpiece). Mark Lindsay Chapman was a leading candidate. Kevin Peter Hall was being considered simultaneously for Data and LaForge. Erin Menyuk lost out on Data but was remembered when they cast The Traveler.
