Shortly after Avengers: Secret Wars, Peter Parker returns to New York City with a mysterious black suit he acquired on Battleworld. Believing it to be advanced alien technology, Peter quickly discovers that the suit enhances his abilities and responds to his thoughts, making him a more powerful Spider-Man than ever before. As a violent gang war erupts between Tombstone, the Maggia, and the mysterious Mr. Negative and his Inner Demons, Peter becomes increasingly involved in the conflict. Along the way, he grows closer to the thrill-seeking Black Cat while struggling with his feelings toward MJ, who is now dating Bugle reporter Eddie Brock. As Peter becomes more aggressive and reckless, the black suit begins subtly amplifying his anger, jealousy, and resentment. When the gang war reaches its violent climax, Peter is forced to confront the darkest version of himself. After the suit encourages him to abandon Eddie and Ned in their moment of greatest danger, Peter chooses compassion and saves them both, proving that his humanity is stronger than the darkness influencing him. Though the gang war ends without a clear victor, Peter realizes how dangerously close he came to losing himself. Seeking answers, he takes the black suit to Reed Richards at the Baxter Building. Reed scans the mysterious material and delivers a horrifying revelation: it isn't advanced technology or fabric—it is a living biological organism. As the black material moves across Peter's body, Reed realizes that Peter has bonded with a symbiote.
