Shortly after the events of Avengers: Secret Wars, Peter Parker returns to New York City wearing a mysterious black suit he acquired on Battleworld. Believing it to be advanced alien technology, Peter quickly embraces its incredible abilities as he rebuilds his life, reconnecting with Ned and working as a freelance reporter for the Daily Bugle. But while New York descends into a violent gang war between the Maggia, Tombstone's criminal empire, and the mysterious Inner Demons led by Martin Li, Peter becomes increasingly dependent on the black suit. His partnership with the thrill-seeking Felicia Hardy only encourages him to embrace his more reckless instincts, while the suit subtly amplifies his anger, jealousy, and resentment. As Peter's behavior becomes increasingly violent, Daredevil becomes one of the first people to realize that something is deeply wrong with him. When the gang war erupts into an all-out battle, Peter is pushed to his darkest point when Eddie Brock and Ned are captured. The symbiote encourages Peter to let Eddie die, exploiting his jealousy over Eddie's relationship with MJ, but Peter ultimately chooses compassion and saves them both. Realizing how close he came to losing himself, Peter begins questioning the true nature of the suit. After the conflict, he seeks help from Reed Richards at the Baxter Building. Reed examines the black material and delivers a horrifying revelation: it isn't advanced technology at all, but a living biological organism that has bonded itself to Peter. As the symbiote subtly moves across Peter's body, Reed realizes that Peter hasn't simply been wearing the suit—the suit has been learning him. It is alive.
