Cogliostro is a former Hellspawn, and the one who informs Spawn that his powers draw upon the powers of Hell and that when he uses them up, he will be ripped back to Hell. He is the so called Angel on Al's shoulder, opposite to Violator, and pushes Spawn to do good and not lose his humanity. Cogliostro gave up on his Hellspawn path and vowed to never use his powers again until he can find a way to rid himself of the curse. He has been around a long time, and implies that he may have actually been the first biblical murderer, Cain
