(book 1) Spensa lives on Detritus, a long-abandoned planet with only remnants of the advanced societies that once inhabited it. That is, until the Defiant and it's fleet of starships crashes there, running away from a group of aliens they don't understand. The inhabitants of the Defiant burrow underground to avoid their attackers, slowly trying to gain ground, until their Air Force becomes the sole focus of their society. Spensa's father was a pilot, the most respected title anyone could have. He found himself in the most important battle in their history, but when he runs away and is shot down, his legacy takes a crooked turn. Spensa refuses to believe her father was a coward, and grows up with the defiant hope that she will someday prove herself and heal her father's legacy. There we find her at 18, desperately trying to become a pilot and prove wrong everyone who ever doubted her.
