John Smith is the guardian of the Battlegrounds where the cubes containing the magic and preserved souls of past portal masters lay. He's guarded the Battlegrounds for millennia with no interruption, but when the portal masters and Skylanders of today arrive to claim the cubes for themselves and find the one containing Chronobones' soul, he's all too happy to take them on.
