Description of Capt. Kathy Mazza*:

A tough, determined spirit, Kathy started off as a cardiac nurse before transiting to the Port Authority Police Department. Rapidly climbing the ranks, she shattered barriers, becoming the first female commanding officer of the Police Academy. One of her main accomplishments was having the PAPD install portable heart defibrillators in each of its airports, as well as a training program on how to use them. On 9/11, Kathy shot out glass windows to help people escape the North Tower. Although she became the first female Port Authority Police Officer killed in the line of duty that fateful day, her indomitable courage and dedication to public safety remain an enduring inspiration.
