Dr. Harland Carter is a geneticist who lost his wife and unborn child to a virus that has decimated much of the world's population. For years, he has lived only with Curtis, his android assistant, who has grown bitter about life and this grim reality. Knowing that Curtis will eventually be out of service, Harland finds a replacement in Sophie, a more advanced model to help him with his work. One day, while working with Sophie, Harland manages to develop a cure for the plague. However, when he discovers his employers' plans for the cure, Harland is forced to escape from them along with Curtis and Sophie.
