A street brawl between the families, which leads to Prince Escalus declaring that any further violence will be punishable by death. Romeo, a Montague, is heartbroken over a previous love, Rosaline, and sneaks into the Capulet’s masquerade ball. There, he meets Juliet, the young Capulet, and the two fall instantly in love, unaware of each other’s family identities. Despite the enmity between their families, Romeo and Juliet secretly marry the next day with the help of Friar Laurence. However, Romeo’s friend, Mercutio, is killed by Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt, in a duel. In a fit of rage, Romeo avenges Mercutio's death by killing Tybalt. As a result, he is banished from Verona. Juliet’s parents, unaware of her secret marriage, arrange for her to marry Paris, a nobleman. In desperation, Juliet seeks Friar Laurence’s help. He gives her a potion that will make her appear dead for 42 hours. The plan is for Romeo to rescue her from the tomb when she awakens, and they can escape together. However, the message explaining the plan fails to reach Romeo. Believing Juliet to be truly dead, Romeo returns to Verona, buys poison, and goes to Juliet’s tomb. He encounters Paris, whom he kills in a duel. Believing Juliet to be dead, Romeo drinks the poison. When Juliet awakens and finds Romeo dead beside her, she stabs herself with his dagger in grief. The two lovers die together.
