In the summer of 1922, Nikki Carraway moves from Minnesota to work as a bond salesman in New York. Nikki rents a house in West Egg, a suburb of New York on Long Island full of the "new rich" who have made their fortunes too recently to have built strong social connections. Nikki graduated from Yale and has connections in East Egg, a town where the people with social connections and "old" money live. Description of Jayla Gatsby (Jay Gatsby):

The title character of The Great Gatsby is a young woman, around thirty years old, who rose from an impoverished childhood in rural North Dakota to become fabulously wealthy. However, she achieved this lofty goal by participating in organized crime, including distributing illegal alcohol and trading in stolen securities. From her early youth, Gatsby despised poverty and longed for wealth and sophistication—he dropped out of St. Olaf’s College after only two weeks because she could not bear the janitorial job with which she was paying her tuition. Though Gatsby has always wanted to be rich, her main motivation in acquiring her fortune was her love for Daniel Buchanan.
