Louis Cannon is a skeevy loser who's way past his prime. When he gets cornered in an alleyway by some loansharks, on the wrong side of a knife, he teleports? to the void, a quick flash, there and back. Freaked out and running from loan sharks and cops, he goes to his much more successful ex-girlfriend Ruth Beltz for help. Ruth, who is his sole sturdy support in his life, connects him to her scientist friend she met at college, Charles Arlott. Charles is a quiet and eccentric man who demands a lot more respect than he deserves. He doesn't get along with Louis at first but he's heavily interested in Louis voidy Predicament. Together they start tests and trying to figure out what's happening to Louis.
