Story Plot

R.U.R. (short for Rossum's Universal Robots) is a 1920 science fiction drama by Karel Čapek. In the story, the author warns of the possible negative effects of technology on humanity. He is influenced by his interest in technology, but also by his concern for the future of humanity (the destruction during World War I). The word robot is first heard in the play, suggested by his brother Josef Čapek at Karl's urging. A young woman visits the island factory of Rossum's Universal Robots to emancipate the robots from capitalist exploitation, with catastrophic results.

    Plot description: The story takes place in an unspecified future on Rossum's Island, a robot factory where all production is done by robots. The President's pretty daughter Helena Glory arrives to join them, with the goal of making the robots equal, and whom everyone gradually comes to love. They gradually tell her the story of the invention of the first robots by old Rossum and his nephew. Helena decides to stay at the factory and then marries the director, Harry Domino. The story continues ten years later, when robots have become widespread. Helena is saddened by the fact that robots, although very human-like, cannot have feelings like humans, so she gets Dr. Gallo to start experimenting with their "souls". Their original goal was to create a paradise on earth for humans so that they would never have to starve to death again and have enough of everything. But the decline has set in, humans have become lazy and have started using robots originally intended for work as soldiers for their wars. The world becomes full of robots, people stop having children, and robots start rebelling against humans. The robots rebelled, formed the Robot Central Committee and declared war on humanity. The robots overwhelmingly defeated humanity, leaving no one to survive. A horrified Helena no longer wants robots to be made, so she burns all plans to make robots. She manages to do so before the rebellious robots arrive on the manufacturing island, where they kill her without mercy. The robots on the island kill all the humans except Alquist, since he was still working with his hands. After murdering humanity, the robots realize that their lifespan is limited and without the original production plans, they will be extinct within twenty years. They therefore ask Alquist to find the destroyed production plans. But he fails to do so. Instead, he finds two enhanced robots, Prime and Helena, who have feelings for each other and protect each other. Alquist decides to send them away, thinking that they may be the hope for the beginning of a new civilization.
