Story Plot

Pyro is a 2025 American gothic psychological thriller film written and directed by Patty Jenkins, produced by M. Night Shyamalan, and starring Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon, Jaeden Martell, Laurence Fishburne, Jason Momoa, Domhnall Gleeson, Sam Neill, and Uma Thurman. It follows a young woman who develops pyrokinesis abilities while coming into conflict with her abusive father. Jerry Bruckheimer and Guillermo del Toro serve as executive producers. Pryo opened in theaters on February 8th, 2025; it received acclaim for its direction, screenplay, special effects, cinematography, Hans Zimmer's musical score, the emotional weight of the story, visual style, and performances— particularly that of Calle, who was awarded a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, while Jenkins earned an Academy Award for Best Director. It was also a box-office success, earning $771 million worldwide against print and advertisement costs of $150 million. Since its release and stream on Max, Pyro has been widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, overtaking Top Gun: Maverick as the best reviewed film of the 2020s. It is also regarded as Jenkins' masterpiece and one of Calle's greatest performances, and is now hailed as one of the greatest thriller films of all time. A sequel entitled Pyro: Child of Rage was released on February 8th, 2026, to a comparable critical and financial success.

    Plot: Young Brittany Houston is enjoying an evening with her family. She often corresponds with her mother Carrie about her tortured childhood; as a child, she had been repeatedly abused and raped by her father Frank, who is unfortunately not imprisoned due to being a drug lord.

    Upon waking up late at night, Brittany angrily damages the bathroom over her tortured childhood. Once she finishes and returns to her room however, her anger causes her to develop and quickly master pyrokinetic abilities, accidentally burning down the hotel building she is staying in. She is rushed to the hospital with no injuries other than being covered in ash.

    Other people that were staying at the hotel have also survived, but Brittany decides not to reveal her newfound powers to anyone due to being traumatized by what she had accidentally done and feeling too remorseful to explain it. Instead, she intends to only explain it to her mother, who initially turns away from her out of fear, before realizing that she has a unique gift and that her condition was caused by anger.

    When Frank receives the news that his daughter survived without being injured, he realizes that she caused the fire and he deduces her powers. Afraid that she will go after him, he tries to leave New York City, but is stopped by his son Will who is also Brittany's younger half-brother. When Will learns the truth about his father, he rejects him and rats him out. Brittany appears and tries to kill Frank in revenge for torturing her, but the police arrive and attempt to arrest her; however, she blasts their cars with her powers as a warning not to come near her before escaping.

    Most cops believe that Brittany is a menace, while the honest ones, namely Bryan Wilson and Harry McCartney, rightly suspect otherwise. Police commissioner Glover Michaelson, who is a close friend of Frank, orders a hunt for Brittany, but Wilson and McCartney refuse to be involved and they quit their jobs. They visit Brittany, who quickly realizes that they want to help her seek revenge. Frank is placed on witness protection at the orders of Michaelson while Brittany reveals to Wilson and McCartney why she wants revenge on her own father. She also remarks that he admitted it to Carrie, who divorced him and took Brittany with her. Will arrives and decides to live with Brittany, who accepts.

    Brittany and Wilson discreetly enter Frank's house and confront him; Brittany forces him to reveal the truth, before seriously injuring him, even going so far as to burning off his left hand. However, she stops, having realized that she was losing control. Frank is then taken to custody, but Michaelson, refusing to believe the truth, tries to kill Brittany, but she burns him alive and threatens to do the same to those loyal to him.

    Frank escapes custody and severely injures Wilson before fatally injuring McCartney; a still alive but seriously burnt Michaelson realizes the error of his ways and finally accepts what Brittany was trying to accomplish, and shoots Frank in the back before dying of his injuries. Brittany then burns Frank to death and dumps his body in the river, finally free of her tortured memories of him.

    In the aftermath, Wilson recovers in the hospital while McCartney succumbs to his wounds. Brittany reconciles with her uncle Kevin when he realizes that Frank was abusing her. Throughout the end credits, Brittany's sniffling and breathing is heard briefly.
