In 1837 Russia Alexander Pushkin becomes obsessed with writing the biography of his great great grandfather at the expense of neglecting and alienating his wife who begins to cheat on him with George Dantes-Gekkern. Through Pushkin's writing we see his ancestor Gannibal going through a similar situation with his wife Evdokia yet Pushkin falters and Gannibal thrives. Pushkin challenges Gekkern to a duel despite the protests of his friend Gogol.
