Strange and creepy happenings beset an average California family, the Freelings -- Steve (Chris Pine), Diane (Cobie Smulders), teenaged Dana (Madison Iseman), 12-year-old Robbie (Owen Vaccaro), and nine-year-old Carol Ann (Brooklynn Prince) -- when ghosts commune with them through the television set. Initially friendly and playful, the spirits turn unexpectedly menacing, and, when Carol Ann goes missing, Steve and Diane turn to parapsychologists Dr. Lesh (Cara Bouno), Ryan (Donald Glover), Marty (Jason Segel), and eventually an exorcist named Tangina Barrons (Margaret Cho) for help.
