Story Plot

New York City. Melvin Udall, a cranky, bigoted, obsessive-compulsive writer, finds his life turned upside down when neighboring gay artist Simon Bishop is hospitalized and his dog is entrusted to Melvin. Additionally, Carol Connelly, the only waitress willing to put up with Melvin at the only restaurant at which he is willing to eat, must leave work to care for her ill son, making it impossible for Melvin to eat breakfast.
