Behold, the land of Alagaësia, vast and green, full of secrets. There are mountains that reach to the stars, forests as vast as an ocean, deserts scorched to utter barrenness and more. You will find a wide variety of races there - from humans full of resilience to long-lived elves and dwarves dwelling in the depths to war-hardened Urgals. And above all: Dragons - radiantly beautiful and terrifying in their ancient splendor. In the last century, King Galbatorix ruled as a tyrant over most of the areas populated by humans and also spread fear and terror among the neighboring peoples. By his will, the dragons were broken and their numbers greatly reduced until only a few remained. The brave humans who resisted Galbatorix fled into the hinterland, where they eventually called themselves Varden. There they lived, with little hope of victory, until the dragon Saphira hatched for the human Eragon. Together, and under the wise leadership of Eragon's liege Nasuada, they went to war against Galbatorix's empire. Now the king is dead, the war that was supposed to overthrow him is over, and the land is renewing itself. But even in these peaceful times, shadows are stirring, rumors are spreading about strange occurrences on the borders of Alagaësia and one man is trying to find out the truth about them ...
