Zoe Green gets a job as a temporary teacher at a local elementary school. She soon realizes one of her students, Maya, is suffering from severe child abuse from her mother, Stella, and her mother's boyfriend, Chris. When Zoe realizes that nobody is doing anything to help Maya, she takes matters into her own hands by faking Maya's death, kidnapping her, taking her to the big city, and attempting to become her new mother.However, when Stella and Chris find out Maya is actually alive and kidnap her back, Stella decides to try and force Maya to love her again. When Stella and Chris later have a new baby, Hudson, Maya is forced to take care of him as well as herself. Despite the danger, Zoe refuses to give up until she has Maya back with her. Eventually, Stella and Zoe realize they have to work together to fix this broken reality. The story revolves around Maya's life, Zoe's identity, and the irreplaceable bond between a mother and daughter.
