For 500 years, the sorcerer Shang Tsung has controlled the ancient Mortal Kombat tournament, using his champion, the four-armed Goro, to defeat Earth's greatest warriors and steal their souls. Now, Goro is undefeated after nine consecutive victories, and if he wins the tenth tournament, Shao Kahn, Emperor of Outworld, will be allowed to conquer Earthrealm. On Shang Tsung's mysterious island, a new generation of warriors is drawn into a battle they barely understand. Liu Kang, a Shaolin warrior haunted by his brother's death, must overcome his grief and rediscover his purpose. Johnny Cage, a cocky Hollywood action star seeking to prove himself, discovers the tournament is no movie. Sonya Blade, a determined Special Forces officer, arrives while pursuing Kano, the ruthless leader of the Black Dragon, whose capture has become personal. As the tournament unfolds, the warriors face deadly supernatural opponents, including the assassin Sub-Zero, the vengeful specter Scorpion, and the mysterious creature Reptile. Shang Tsung manipulates the fighters while feeding on the souls of the defeated. Sonya fights to rescue her captured squad, Cage discovers courage beneath his arrogance, and Scorpion finally confronts Sub-Zero. When Cage challenges Goro, he risks everything to defeat the undefeated champion and save Earthrealm. With Goro fallen, Liu Kang becomes Earth's final hope. Guided by the thunder god Raiden, Liu embraces his destiny and faces Shang Tsung, who unleashes the souls and powers he has stolen over centuries. Liu defeats the sorcerer, freeing his countless victims as the island begins to crumble into the sea. The survivors escape, but Kano vanishes aboard a stolen boat. Earthrealm has survived—but in Outworld, an enraged Shao Kahn refuses to accept defeat, and the battle for Earthrealm has only begun.
