Liu Kang, a young Chinese martial arts expert, learns that his younger brother was killed during a fight against the sorcerer Shang Tsung. The latter promised his master Shao Kahn, the emperor of Outworld, absolute control of the Earth so that evil and desolation would settle there for eternity.
