Maximus
https://fanedit.org/maximus-an-alternate-cut-of-gladiator/ Similar to irl except Mel Gibson plays Maximus, as he along with Antonio Banderas, and Tom Cruise were considered, however, producers had Crowe at the top of their list after his breakout performance in L.A. Confidential (1997). Jude Law auditioned for Commodus, but Joaquin Phoenix was offered the part after sending in a "knockout" audition tape (and he was awesome). Seeing what it would be like with these 2 replacements, I'm also replacing some of the Roman generals to those who are either Italian or have Italian heritage
