Born in South Africa, Max Eisenhardt manifested his mutant abilities after a lynch mob killed his family. He soon became a vocal opponent of the Apartheid government and eventually became a leading figure in the mutant civil rights movement, founding the Brotherhood of Mutants as Magneto.
