Alex the lion is the king of the "jungle", as a main attraction at the Central Park Zoo. His friends, Marty, Melman, and Gloria, have spent their whole lives in blissful captivity. One night, Marty, the Zebra, decides to make an escape with the help of some penguins to explore the world. However, Alex and the other animals try to find Marty before being sent back to Africa and become washed up on Madagascar.
