The novel begins with Aubrey Priestly living alone in her family’s apartment, hiding from the world after a devastating car accident claimed the lives of her father and younger sister, Savannah. Overwhelmed by the loss, Aubrey’s mother has emotionally collapsed and eventually disappears, leaving Aubrey to fend for herself with nothing but a goldfish and her own resourcefulness.
