In 19th century France, in the midst of the French Revolution, a convict named Jean Valjean is released from prison on parole. He is bitter and jaded, but upon meeting a kind bishop, he commits his soul to God and devotes himself to living a good life. He breaks parole and makes a new life for himself, but is now being hunted by his parole officer, Javert. Jean Valjean meets Fantine, a young, dying woman with no means to pay for her child, Cosette. After Fantine's death, Jean Valjean rescues Cosette from the abusive Thenardiers, and she becomes the light of his life.
