In 19th century France, in the midst of the French Revolution, a convict named Jean Valjean is released from prison on parole. He is bitter and jaded, but upon meeting a kind bishop, he commits his soul to God and devotes himself to living a good life. He breaks parole and makes a new life for himself, but is now being hunted by his parole officer, Javert. Jean Valjean meets Fantine, a young, dying woman with no means to pay for her child, Cosette. After Fantine's death, Jean Valjean rescues Cosette from the abusive Thenardiers, and she becomes the light of his life. Description of Fantine:

A young woman who, abandoned by her lover, must care for herself and her daughter, Cosette. Although she is left with nothing, she clings to her dignity, and continues to fight for her child, who becomes her one inspiration. The audience witnesses her descent into poverty as she is exiled by society and ultimately dies, her final action being to give Cosette to Jean Valjean's care. Age: mid 20s.
