Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is a 2004 Hugo Award-winning historical fantasy novel by Susanna Clarke, set in an alternate 19th-century England during the Napoleonic Wars where magic has returned to the world. The story follows the reclusive Mr. Norrell and the daring Jonathan Strange, two contrasting magicians who bring magic back to England, initially as teacher and pupil, then as rivals. They both work for their own purposes, trying to reach their own goals. What they don't know is that everything they do fulfills the prophecy of the Raven King. With magic long since lost to England, two men are destined to bring it back; the reclusive Mr. Norrell and daring novice Jonathan Strange. So begins a dangerous battle between two great minds.
