Tony Stark vanishes from a tense Stark Industries shareholder meeting as global concerns mount over the company’s weapons, a rising terrorist faction called the Ten Rings, and whispers of a rogue scientific group known as A.I.M. In Afghanistan, Stark is ambushed and captured by the Ten Rings. Behind the scenes, his business partner Obadiah Stane orchestrates the betrayal to seize control. While imprisoned, Stark builds a prototype suit and escapes. Colonel James Rhodes, suspicious of SHIELD’s silence, uses military channels to investigate Tony’s disappearance, uncovering signs of Stark weapons being sold illegally. Back home, Tony announces the company will exit the weapons business, triggering mass layoffs that spark resentment in the tech world. Stark perfects the Iron Man suit while Stane, using stolen designs, creates the Iron Monger. Their rooftop battle ends with Stark overloading the arc reactor to defeat him.
