After the events of the Infinity Gauntlet, Magneto’s exponential loss to Thanos triggered his PTSD from the holocaust, making him completely catatonic. He was detained by the Mutant Control Agency and was held in their most secure cell, made entirely of plastic. When he heard of the return of the Infinity Gems, he was motivated to collect all the gems and use them to resurrect everyone that died at the hands of the Nazis.
