As for the story of Destrian Hope, there is no end. Who can say whether he lived or died? Who knows why he killed his brother, or how the Meadows were engulfed in flames? After the smoke cleared, several bodies were recovered, none of which belonged to Destrian himself. Over a hundred years later and there are still no answers. No, Destrian Hope’s story has no ending. No closure, no peace—just mystique and sadness and the whispers of magic, fueled by superstition and public imagination. The drama writes itself: a boy on the edge of both society and adulthood, a crow at his beck and call... two dozen dead in an explosion of terror and intrigue, the rumor of witchcraft preceding them... Witches in Griswold? In the following years, the public wanted to know, and a profitable industry was expertly formed. Folklore survives when logic fails, but so does hope. Hope for answers, hope for evidence, hope for magic—and if history is kind, hope for forgiveness. For in the end (if one ever finds such an ending), to hope is to accept the mystery of all things.
