If He Had Been With Me by Laura Nowlin is a book about the emotions that come with loss and the complex relationship between childhood best friends. The story is told from Autumn's perspective as she deals with the death of her childhood friend Phineas "Finny" in a mysterious car accident. Autumn wonders what would have happened if Finny had been with her instead, and the book jumps between different timelines to explain her behavior in the present.
