  • thecookieprincess The story is set in 1940 in Austria, during World War II, when the country is under the full control of the Nazi regime. The main character, Angela Becker, is 21 years old and comes from a family with ties to the Nazi regime - her father, Otto Becker, is a high-ranking SS officer. Angela, although seemingly arranged and loyal to her father, hides a deep secret from the world - she has fallen in love with her peer Heidi, a childhood friend, a girl who comes from a completely different background. Their love is forbidden, not only by social norms, but also by a brutal law that criminalizes homosexuality. Angela and Heidi live in fear, unable to reveal their feelings. Their relationship is full of hidden glances, touches and secret gestures. Everything gets complicated when Otto, increasingly suspicious of his daughter's behavior, begins to follow her actions. His vigilance grows, and Angela's love becomes increasingly dangerous - for herself and for Heidi. Faced with imminent danger and the constant fear that their affection will be discovered, the girls decide to take a desperate step: flee to neutral Switzerland, where they can be safe. At the last minute, however, their plans are betrayed by a neighborhood boy who, raised in the spirit of denunciation, passes information about their intentions to Otto. A dramatic confrontation ensues. Otto - aware of what his daughter and her beloved have done - becomes enraged. When he finds both girls prepared to leave, he pulls out a gun in anger and points it at Heidi, ready to kill her for betraying his family and ideology. At the last moment Angela stands between them, trying to save her beloved. A violent struggle ensues. As Otto gains the upper hand and begins to strangle Angela, Jutta, Angela's mother, decides to side with her daughter. With death hanging over the family, Jutta pulls out a pistol and shoots her husband, wounding him in the shoulder. Otto falls to the ground, and a final split occurs between the couple. Heidi dies on the spot - her death shocks everyone. Angela, heartbroken, distraught, experiences an internal storm. Her life is forever changed by this tragedy. Shocked by the violence she witnessed, she decides to leave the country that raised her and where she was betrayed. After Heidi's tragic death, Angela and Jutta decide to flee. They get help from Angela's grandfather, who has contacts with people in Switzerland - a neutral country that gives them a chance for a new life. Jutta and Angela, along with their grandparents, go into exile. Their journey to Switzerland is a quiet escape from the Nazi regime, but also from themselves - from what they leave behind: death, betrayal, and repressed love. In Switzerland, in a small village, Angela becomes a quiet, closed person. Although her heart still mourns Heidi, she tries to find a new sense of life. She writes letters to her beloved in a notebook that she keeps secret - a way of preserving her memory. In time, Angela begins to help out at the village library, trying to live a quiet and normal life.
